How to Make a Photo Magazine in One Evening

A photo magazine isn't a summer-long project. With the right order of operations, about three hours takes you from 2,000 photos on your phone to a magazine ready to print. Here's exactly how.

Published · 3 min read

Before you start

  • A topic: a year, a trip, your relationship, a birthday.
  • A page count: 24 pages for a year or a trip, 48 for several years. You can add pages along the way.
  • Your photos: your phone is enough, no need to move everything to a computer.
  • Two names if it's a couple's magazine, and maybe a date.

With Pictozia you buy a magazine credit first and make it whenever you like. Nothing's rushed and every change saves automatically, so you can do it in one evening or in three short sessions.

Step 1: sort without looking at everything (45 minutes)

This is the part that scares people off, and it gets easy once you change approach. Don't scroll photo by photo. Work by moments.

  1. List the moments the magazine should tell: eight to twelve for 24 pages. For a year, that might be the ski trip, the March birthday, the long weekend in Chicago, the summer, the fall, the holidays.
  2. For each moment, jump to that date in your camera roll and add the three to six photos that sum it up to a dedicated album.
  3. Keep one wide or atmosphere shot per moment, not just portraits: a dish, a landscape or a detail adds rhythm.

You should end up with 35 to 50 photos for 24 pages. That's deliberately few: a magazine breathes when every photo has room. More on that in how to pick the right photos.

Step 2: pick a template (10 minutes)

The template does most of the layout work: cover, table of contents, sections, photo frames, type. Choose by tone rather than color, since colors adapt to your photos. A couple template has sections like "the day we met" and "things I love about you"; a travel template has panoramic spreads and a stops page.

Tip: don't hunt for the perfect template. One that fits your topic is enough. Everything is editable afterward.

Step 3: drop in your photos (15 minutes)

Upload your album in one go. The editor sorts photos by the date they were taken and fills the template's frames. Type both names once and they land on the cover and wherever the template needs them. At this point you already have a full magazine. All that's left is fine-tuning.

Step 4: fine-tune page by page (1 hour)

Go through the magazine in order, one spread at a time, and ask three questions:

  • Is the right photo big? One strong photo per spread deserves the full page. Swap two photos with a drag.
  • Is the crop right? Center faces and avoid cutting at joints like wrists and knees.
  • Does the page need a word? A short headline, a date, a few-word caption.

Don't fill every inch. A page with one big photo and a single line of text is often the best page in the magazine.

Step 5: write headlines and captions (30 minutes)

This is what turns an album into a magazine. You don't need to be a writer: the best headlines are short and concrete. "Lisbon, finally." "The yellow couch." "Three days of rain and one good laugh." Captions say what the photo can't: who took it, what had just happened, what happened next.

Step 6: check before you send (15 minutes)

  1. Flip through the full preview from cover to cover, like a reader would.
  2. Spell-check the names on the cover, letter by letter.
  3. Look at the warnings: the editor flags photos that are too small to print large.
  4. Check the last page: it's the one people read as they close it.

Then send it. A real person reviews your magazine before it prints and emails you if anything looks off. US orders arrive in 6 to 12 business days.

Mistakes that cost time

  • Trying to include everything: 120 photos in 24 pages means postage stamps. Cut.
  • Starting with the cover: do it last, once you know which photo sums up the story.
  • Using screenshots: grab the originals; screenshots are too small to print well.
  • Editing every photo: paper looks better than you'd think. Skip the hours of filters.

Short on time?

Split it into three sessions: sorting one night, layout another, words and checks the third. Your credit waits 60 days, and we extend it, no questions asked, if life gets in the way. Ready? Start on the custom magazine page.
